The Volumetrics diet has a very interesting concept and it was conceived by the famous nutritionist, Barbara Rolls. This diet bases on a very controversial idea and it assumes that you shouldn’t reduce the size of your daily meals. Instead, you’re encouraged to eat MORE, until you are not hungry anymore. According to the Volumetrics diet, you should not focus on counting the calories, the carbohydrates, fats or proteins. The idea behind this diet implies that a lot of people cannot follow a proper diet from scratch to scratch, because of the indicated types of foods, which can become unpleasant and unsatisfactory for them.

Effectiveness

According to the Volumetrics diet, you should eat only foods that are low in calories, but you should consume them in high amounts, until you feel satisfied and you don’t have that hunger sensation anymore. In theory, this sounds like a dream diet, but is it really effective on the long run? Many subjects are just getting bored of eating the same type of food over and over again. Even if a certain diet will appease the hunger, they will still feel the urge to eat something else, if diet food is less then delicious. So, are the foods from the Volumetrics diet palatable? Are they satisfactory for the organism?

Energy density and the allowed foods

The energy density of a certain food, is a very important aspect because it expresses the number of calories that a food contains. All the foods presented in this diet have a low energy densities so in conclusion, they contain a reduced number of calories. The Volumetrics diet has a list with the foods that you’re allowed to eat. The list is long and it mainly includes non-starchy vegetables, nonfat milk and different soup broths. Basically, most of these foods contain a high level of water in their composition. The most common vegetables from that list are: tomatoes, onions, alfalfa sprouts, broccoli, mushrooms, carrots, lettuce, cucumber, asparagus, zucchini and many other. This diet is not just about vegetables and it also encourages the dieter to consume lean meat and products rich in fiber. Fiber is considered filling and therefore, it will settle your hunger sensation. Because the good fats are necessary for a healthy diet, the Volumetrics program recommends the consumption of fats, but in small amounts.

This diet isn’t for everybody

Barbara Rolls admits that this diet is not meant for everyone. There are many psychological reasons behind overeating and there are many people who are eating just to combat boredom or because they suffer from a form of anxiety. This diet will not be effective for them. Also, some people don’t find the foods on the list satisfactory and filling.

Conclusion

On a first sight, the idea of the diet sounds too good to be true. Eating more to loose weight, seems like the perfect deal, but things are a bit more complicated than that. The “mechanism” behind this diet, implies that you should have some balanced meals, using products that are low on calories but also healthy for your organism. Overall, the Volumetrics diet can prove effective for you and if you follow it accordingly, you will surely start loosing some pounds.
