As you probably heard before, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
This old saying has been recently confirmed by the specialists, who are showing us that skipping breakfast is not a very good idea. The following article aims to explain you, what are the risks of skipping breakfast and why you should always have a balanced eating style.
The most recent studies came from the American Heart Association (AHA) and British Heart Foundation, and the results are truly alarming. According to the studies, a person who skips breakfast, is exposed to a lot of health issues like diabetes, obesity or even heart disease.
The scientists from the Columbia University reviewed the studies and concluded that almost a third of the adults, choose to skip breakfast and replace it with a quick snack. According to them, this approach is entirely wrong, and on the long term it can generate the above mentioned health conditions.
After reviewing more studies on this particular matter, the scientists deduced that a person who has a balanced diet and doesn’t skip breakfast, won’t overeat for the rest of the day. This is a great thing, considering that our body will be fully energized and will be able to burn all the calories, before we go to bed.
How much should we eat at breakfast?
Even though there isn’t an exact number of calories that you need to consume, the specialists are advising that you should eat around 15% – 25%, from our daily energy intake. That means around 375-625 calories for a man and 300-500 calories for a woman. According to the scientists, the perfect breakfast has to be rich in vital nutrients like potassium, calcium, fibre and vitamin D.
Another important aspect of a healthy eating is when you eat your breakfast. According to Prof. Marie-Pierre St-Onge, our bodies have their own internal clock and if we don’t eat the breakfast when we’re supposed to, we risk a lot of health problems. The Professor also warns us about the emotional eating and advises us to plan both when we’re eating and what we’re eating. Snacks are not forbidden but we need to distance breakfast from them, and to create a proper eating schedule.
Skipping breakfast is a very bad idea and even if you have a very busy schedule, you have to make time for that as well. Remember that health is your most important asset and that you have to take good care of it.
